Thakadu Battery Materials was founded in 2015 with a clear vision to support the energy transition through key cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries and stationary energy systems. At a time when little processing capacity existed outside Asia, we made the bold decision to develop Africa’s first battery-grade nickel refinery. From feasibility to construction, the project has grown into a fully operational facility supported by an exceptional team. We produce high-purity nickel sulphate and cobalt hydroxide in South Africa for export to global markets, proving the impact of adding value at source.
As our global export footprint expanded, we identified a growing need for geographic and end-user diversification. While our large battery customers in Asia had bulk requirements, our customers in Europe, North America, Latin America required customised packaging and a more tailored service. This insight led to the creation of Thakadu Packaging, a company that delivers export-ready solutions for international clients in the plating and chemical sectors. With a capable and agile team, the business has since grown to include the distribution of nickel chloride, cobalt oxide, and ammonium sulphate to customers across South Africa.
Thakadu Chrome was established in 2016 with a focus on creating value through strategic partnerships. Our first investment was in ChromTech Holdings, a leading business in chrome beneficiation with operations spanning chrome recovery plants, mining and strategic joint ventures. ChromTech has created significant jobs and continues to invest in community upliftment and education. Our partnership reflects our belief in responsible growth that delivers both commercial and social value.
